Day 3: “Fix your thoughts on what is true.” – Philippians 4:8 (NIV)

“Summing it all up, friends, I’d say you’ll do best by filling your minds and meditating on things true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious—the best, not the worst; the beautiful, not the ugly; things to praise, not things to curse. Put into practice what you learned from me, what you heard and saw and realized. Do that, and God, who makes everything work together, will work you into his most excellent harmonies.” – Philippians 4:8-9 (MSG)

I am someone who regularly “swipes right” on Instagram ads. Like a moth to a flame I am just drawn to the shop now button. (#ILikeCuteThings) One day, I was curious about the Instagram algorithm and how it tailors my shopping likes. So I did a little Google deep dive to understand this process.

I learned the algorithms are prioritized by the type of content with which I engage. It’s tailored FOR me based on what’s important TO me. As I read today’s scripture, I realized that I am far from having the right alignment of my heart with this verse. If my heart were a part of an algorithmic feed, would it focus on the best and not the worse or the beautiful and not the ugly?

Friends, I’m here to tell ya, it probably wouldn’t be good. I constantly need to realign my thoughts with what is the truth of God’s word.  My desire is that the content chosen in my heart algorithm will promote“…the best, not the worst, the beautiful, not the ugly…”(v. 8).

The enemy of our souls loves dredging up all the past failures and doubts that distract us from the goal of a life renewed. Once we know the source, we can counter those thoughts with what scripture says is“…true.” I’m so thankful that my heart algorithms are on display for no one but God. He understands I need lots of love, patience, and grace.

Reflection

As you read the verse in Phillipians, what words from the passage caught your attention?  What words does the enemy of your soul try to use to try to discourage you? What is one way to counter these thoughts?

Prayer

Lord, thank you that your love is changing me and transforming me daily. I want my heart to align with yours. God, I’m so thankful for your grace, love and forgiveness. Help me to think about what is true, the beautiful and not the ugly, the best and not the worst. That’s a tall order God, for me! You know this.  But I know that when I set my mind on you and my intention to follow you, the Holy Spirit is there to give me reminders of what is an excellent way to live. Help me to walk in step with you today.

Amen.
