Picture from Eastlake Gala 2004

It was July 2003 that we arrived in the Eastlake community, rented a home, enrolled our kids in school and began the work of pouring our best effort into building teams. The church was growing so fast, we could hardly catch our breath. This month, our family celebrates a milestone of 20-years on staff at Eastlake Church! 👏🏾

Nothing about this is easy, but a lot of it is still fun!

The job of building strong teams with enthusiasm and curiosity challenged us and shaped us, refining our connection to Jesus in profound ways. Looking back, I am grateful for the countless opportunities for growth partnering with this ministry has provided.

I’m amazed at God’s goodness and filled with such immense gratitude for the relationships formed within our church and Chula Vista community. These opportunities, challenges and growth are now a part of our family’s story.

I am better because I learned how to be loved and how to love others.

Here’s some other lessons learned:

  1. Don’t be afraid to try something new. When I feel stagnant, I use this quote from one of my favorite authors on leadership, Todd Henry. He says,  “Safety is not an option.” Jesus never went the safe route. The dude was walking on water and telling his friends to do the same. Now obviously, Jesus is Divine. But, don’t simply check the boxes in our life. Remain curious.
  2. Stay curious. This is how we grow in our relationships and connection with God. Seize every opportunity to learn how incredible(and sometimes scary) the world can be. As we get into an connected relationship with Jesus, he is invited into the process to develop your character and refine your life focus.  May you desire Jesus’ presence in all the stuff of this life. Stay curious about the world and the stories of others.
  3. Don’t be sus. Clear is kind. Unclear is unkind. Be a person of your word. It’s okay to say ‘no.”
  4. Keep it Moving: No doubt in this life, we will encounter obstacles–sometimes overt and covert. No one wants challenges. It sucks. But. as we mature, the challenges shape us and we develop resilience.
    1. Overt: These are the obstacles that present themselves in your face.
    2. Covert: The obstacles you cannot see. They are hidden ghost rules that could leave you spinning your wheels.
  5. Be where your feet are. When with the fam, be with the fam. When with people, be with the people.

Along this journey there have been highs and lows, endless possibilities and challenges. I raise my glass to continue growth. I want be curious about learning how impact on the world.  To everyone who has been a part of our journey-colleagues, friends, and family – THANK YOU! Your love and support, and encouragement have been invaluable. Cheers!
